The story of separation from 1905 to the 1970s is pretty complex. In 2023, italyMONDO! made the story of reunification really very simple. They did the work. italyMONDO understood my history, found my family, and reunited me with a heritage that I thought had been lost in the mist of time.

We had the pleasure of working with ItalyMONDO! in 2023. We were planning a trip to Italy and were interested in finding out if we had any relatives living in the town our mother's people were from. Not only did Peter do the genealogical research on our family (impossible for us non-Italian speakers) and present his findings on a Zoom call, but he journeyed with his team to the town our family is from, found that we DID have relatives there, and made initial contact with them before we traveled. Seeing selfies of relatives we had never met was incredible!

As we began planning our trip, Peter and the team assured us that we would need at least an entire day for the experience of meeting our family. We couldn't imagine what there would be to do in the tiny little town with people we never met. We went on faith and we are so glad that we did!

There was so much joy. We visited, shared photos and then went on a pre-arranged visit to the cemetery where our ancestors were buried. Deeply meaningful. We met with the mayor, got a tour of the town and castle, had a multi-course traditional Italian meal al fresco with our newly connected family and bonded as best we could in a short period of time.

All of this was just more than we ever could have imagined or hope for and it was all made possible by the INCREDIBLE interpreting skills of the team, especially Peter. They made it seem as though we were speaking directly to our family, seamlessly capturing emotion and inflection as everyone was telling stories. Tracing my families history was far more emotional than I expected.

While uncovering the story of your ancestry, Peter works fast and efficiently on screen sharing documentation images often times obscure from Ship Manifests to small village Birth Registries. He lists the Government Agencies you need to contact for official copies, and he makes suggestions for correspondence. All of this gave us a workable path toward pursuing Italian Citizenship as well as anecdotes of family history to cherish and share.

Words cannot truly express how grateful I am with the outstanding service, care, compassion and diligence that ItalyMondo has offered me throughout the more than two years long process of my son's Italian citizenship request.

I've been working with ItalyMondo for a few years now, on the long and tedious path towards citizenship. I have to say, I'm so happy that I did. It was something I talked about for years, but was just overwhelmed at how to go about it.

What a fantastic experience! My brother, sister and I are preparing to take our mother to Sicily to see the town we believe her grandparents were from, Tusa, which is just east of Cefalu. We had their names and what we thought was a ship's manifest for her grandmother. We asked Peter and his team to verify our research to date and add any other information.

Peter is like a wizard at the keys, conjuring up all kinds of information. He shared his methodology with us as he worked: "Good roots, good trunks, good branches" and "Let the easy things make the hard things easy." As it turned out, my great grandfather proved to be an elusive character, not appearing on ship manifests, or in available birth records. Like many other reviewers, I started the process of collecting documents on my own. The checklist from my local consulate seemed straightforward enough, and I figured I could research the rest. She promised that she would be able to guide me from initial application to passport. My father and I began sending her all the information she needed, including original records that we could never replace. In short, it was an unmitigated disaster. After years of dealing with her, I finally reached back out to Peter.

Peter’s team setup a zoom meeting. He was nice and extremely knowledgeable. He knew of these other two consultants and said that they probably didn’t have us apply in Benevento because they push so much volume through there it was attracting attention, turning it into a citizenship farm. He never disparaged them or said anything bad about these consultants, even though he would have been preaching to the choir.

I offered, basically begged, to compensate Peter for his time and the time from his team. He refused to take my money. He said that he just feels terrible - there are so many people who have had an experience like myself, people who have already paid someone to do the work. After months of back and forth, we were ready to go to Italy for an in-person meeting with local officials. The goal was to establish residency and “claim” our citizenship through juris sanguine. She assured us that this would only take two weeks, and we told her we had a hard stop and could not stay longer due to work obligations. She said that this would not be a problem at all. This turned out to be false. Unfortunate, because if we suspected this would have been a problem, we would have moved our dates.

Here’s what happened next:

- She handed us off to some guy in the town of Benevento who runs a genealogy tourism business.

- This guy moved us to a small town about 30 minutes away. He said that he had deep relationships in this town, and that they’re the fastest at processing citizenships. This turned out to be a lie. He didn’t know anyone in this town and had never done an application there.

- We were told that we would be put up in the most comfortable accommodations, an “Italian vacation”. We ended up in a small, cottage with intermittent hot water and heat. It hadn’t been cleaned in years and was filled with spiders.

- He stalled for several days in terms of setting our appointment. We later learned that this was because he didn’t have our paperwork because out consultant didn’t send it to him. When we found this out we called her and had her overnight it to him.

- When our paperwork came, we went with him to the town clerk to submit everything. Days went by and we were approaching our deadline and no update from him.

- Finally he said we should go back to Benevento and restart our process there. We asked why and he was evasive. Knowing that he had been dishonest about not having our paperwork and stalling us, we pressed on. He finally admitted this smaller town had rejected our application (probably because they rightly saw him as a grifter) and told him to take a hike.

- We went back to Benevento, where this guy was from. He finally submitted our applications (full of errors it later turns out) and said we were free to leave (it’s unclear if this was true).

- He lost the originals of our documents that we left with him (he claims that we took them, which we did not per his request).

- The original consultant lost the documents for my sister, who she was also putting together a package for. She had also never set a consulate appointment for her, setting her back years.

- The applications for my father and myself were eventually approved. We received a low quality photo sent via WhatsApp, as the only records we had that our citizenship was now recognized.

- We were on our own in navigating the notoriously buggy AIRE system to set appointments to get our passports and to register aboard as Italian citizens. We were completely stuck and couldn’t get any responses from our original consultant. Keep in mind, we had paid her for this already.

- This was when I reached back out to Peter.

Peter’s team setup a zoom meeting. He was nice and extremely knowledgeable. He knew of these other two consultants and said that they probably didn’t have us apply in Benevento because they push so much volume through there it was attracting attention, turning it into a citizenship farm. Peter and his team were able to walk me through the AIRE system (where we spotted errors made by the previous consultants) via screen sharing. When I struggled to get my passport appointment scheduled, Peter and his team were able to set it up for me.

I offered, basically begged, to compensate Peter for his time and the time from his team. He refused to take my money. He said that he just feels terrible - there are so many people who have had an experience like myself, people who have already paid someone to do the work. He just wanted to help us out and make sure that we got this over the finish line. After he rejected my third offer to compensate him and his team, I stopped offering not wanting to be rude.

To this day, we don’t have either set of documents back from the original consultants. We’ve paid for my sister’s application and cannot get the original consultant to pick up the phone. The only time we were able to get a response was when we threatened a lawsuit or left asked a question on her public “italian citizenship” Facebook group, after trying to reach her via phone or email.

With Peter’s help, I was finally able to get my passport. I doubt this would have happened with their help getting me through the final steps. They are true professionals, and my biggest regret was that I didn’t work with them from the outset. I highly recommend him and his team. ❤️

I am seeking Italian Citizenship by descent for myself, my adult children and other extended family members. This has been a 2+ year attempt on my part and I reached a recent impasse in my efforts. Happily, I was referred to Peter Farina and italyMondo! and only wish that I had contacted them sooner. My initial contact, via phone and email was with an italyMondo consultant (Dina Di Leonardo) and was extremely productive (and unbelievably free). We hashed out some of the basics regarding the path to Italian Citizenship and Dina shared documents with me to help me better absorb the more specific details that we discussed.

When I next spoke with Peter Farina for a one-hour Zoom meeting he: reviewed and assessed the documents that I had collected on my own; built a family tree using online resources (which was especially important to me since I had no Italian documents) and; explained the finer nuances of Consulate-specific regulations. Peter has a natural curiosity e.g. he dug deep to examine an anomaly in my grandmother’s unmarried name. Also impressive, was Peter’s knowledge of the different regions in Italy and the naming idiosyncrasies for each region. The fee for this meeting with Peter was $500 and worth every penny! I so appreciate the corporate culture and infrastructure at italyMondo! Their methods and practices are well-honed and organized with supporting documentation at each step. My many follow-up questions were readily answered with carefully consideration. The transition from Dina to Peter was seamless; I did not need to repeat information. Dina and Peter are professional, courteous, gracious, and seemingly generally interested in my quest for Italian Citizenship. Discussion of fees was very low-key without any pressure to continue in their process.

I am fortunate that I did not make too many mistakes in my collection of documents prior to speaking with italyMondo!; however, the potential exists to collect the wrong forms or data. I can't say enough about ItalyMONDO! My family and I started the journey toward citizenship in April of 2017. They quickly confirmed eligibility and have held my hand through the entire process. Amazingly, they were able to locate the church where my grandfather was baptized in 1910 to obtain the certificate as he did not have a birth certificate because he was born 2 years before that state began to issue them. Italy MONDO had me register for a citizenship appointment at our consulate in addition just in case it was needed since it would be about an 18 month wait. By January of 2019 everything was in order and we made plans as a family to travel to Italy in June for our 2 week journey to citizenship. At this time, they also registered my children for citizenship appointments at the consulate again only as a precaution (thankfully). Two weeks before our departure Peter (the founder of italyMONDO) called us personally to discuss a policy change regarding an Italian law that could prevent us from getting our citizenship via "skip the line" . He was very knowledgable and recommended we cancel our trip and go through our consulate. This would give us more legal recourse for a path towards citizenship if we were denied. Fortunately, by now this appointment was only 2 months away!

Prior to my consulate appointment ItalyMONDO send me an entire binder with everything I would need for my citizenship, my children's citizenship, and to register my marriage so that my husband could eventually apply for citizenship too. The process at the consulate was very smooth. They were very impressed with my packet and even asked me who did it for me. They thought I had hired a lawyer in Italy. When it wartime for my children's appointments, they were cancelled due to covid. They actually knew about the cancellation before we did. They helped us regroup and submit all of the paperwork via mail.

I received my citizenship March of 2021. ItalyMONDO has continued to be by my side during the passport application, the registration of my marriage, the citizenship status for my children, and the continued journey for my husband's application and citizenship as well. I know they will be there until we all have our passports!
